MEET THE DIRECTOR
Frederick Lee is a conductor and music educator with 34 years of public school and community ensemble experience. He has been teaching music in the SUHSD for 26 years. He is the Music Director of the Coronado Concert Band – a position he has held for 18 years. He performs professionally as a freelance drummer/percussionist. In 2011 Mr. Lee joined the conducting and teaching staff of the Orquesta Manuel Maria Gutierrez (the National Youth Orchestra) of Costa Rica.
Mr. Lee is active as a festival adjudicator for the California Music Educators Association and as a band and orchestra clinician. In 2012 he was honored as Jazz Educator of the Year in the state of California by the CMEA. He was recognized as Outstanding Music Educator and Jazz Educator by the CMEA Southern Border Section and received the “Hats Off to Teachers” award for his contributions to music education from the San Diego County Office of Education. He was Teacher of the Year at Mar Vista Middle School. His bands, jazz ensemble and guitar students at RDR continue to bring pride to their school and community.
Mr. Lee’s ensembles have earned the highest ratings at district, local and regional music festivals for three decades. His groups have performed at conferences with guest artists, at Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Universal Studios and Knott’s Berry Farm. In 2003 his students were invited to perform at the Next Generation Monterey Jazz Festival.
Mr. Lee holds a Bachelor of Music Degree in Theory and Composition from the University of California and a Master of Music Degree in Conducting from San Diego State University. His conducting teachers and mentors include Jung-Ho Pak, Harold Warman, Robert Flemming, Mitch Fennel and Ronald Ondrejka. Mr. Lee lives in Spring Valley with his wife Glenda and their son Jonathan.
